EMC Uses Mirantis OpenStack to Enhance Storage Cloud Service

EMC, a global leader in data storage founded in 1979 with over one Exabyte of capacity and 70,000+ employees, needed to modernize the management layer for its large-scale public object storage service. The existing admin stack relied on manual processes that couldn’t keep up with rapid customer growth; EMC required a highly available, high-performance, scalable, secure, and easy-to-use platform that could be deployed quickly, meet enterprise SLAs and compliance, and also support new public and private compute services.

EMC adopted Mirantis’ OpenStack distribution, using the Fuel installer, reference architecture and Mirantis services, plus Cisco ASR/Nexus networking and Terraform for orchestration; a pilot was up in two days and production (18 compute nodes in each of eight locations) launched in November 2015. The result was a fast, seamless deployment that met launch targets, improved availability, performance and scalability, cut two weeks off the timeline, shifted staff from maintenance to development, and drove high developer adoption and faster time-to-market.
