Cornell Lab of Ornithology delivers bird data at scale with Mirantis, cutting lead times to hours and minutes

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, a non-profit organization under Cornell University, needed to deliver highly available and scalable citizen science applications to a global user base. Their challenge was to meet these high performance expectations while leveraging their existing on-premises university infrastructure economically and without creating an operations bottleneck for developers. They partnered with vendor Mirantis to find a solution.

Mirantis implemented an on-premises private cloud solution using Mirantis Kubernetes Engine, Mirantis Container Runtime, and Mirantis Secure Registry. This provided the Lab with a flexible, performant environment that eliminated configuration drift and provided full parity between test and production. The results were transformative: Mirantis helped the Lab accelerate development, reduce risk, and achieve high availability. Their lead time for new projects was reduced from days or weeks to just hours or minutes.
