Reducing Congestion and Optimizing Signal Timing Systems With Miovision Solutions

Miovision, a leader in traffic data and signal-control solutions, partnered with the City of Peterborough to address severe congestion on Lansdowne Street — a 1.75 km, high‑capacity arterial carrying 23,000–29,500 vehicles per day. The corridor suffered long peak travel times, frequent stops and high emissions, prompting a pilot to compare traditional time‑of‑day signal timing with adaptive, real‑time control.

Using Miovision TrafficLink hardware and Surtrac adaptive signal control, the pilot dynamically optimized green time across intersections and was tested in alternating ON–OFF cycles. Results showed travel time reductions of ~11% eastbound and ~30% westbound, a 41.3% drop in weekday afternoon vehicle delay (westbound), 37–53% fewer corridor stops, a 20% cut in vehicle emissions (≈273 t CO2), roughly $977,000 in annual user cost savings plus ≈106,700 L (~$213,000) in fuel savings, and approval of $1M in capital funding to expand the system.
