Preparing Communities for Crisis Resilience

McElhanney, a western Canadian civil engineering firm, was tasked by the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to quickly assess traffic flow after November 2021 floods washed out more than 60 miles of highways. The challenge was to gather accurate vehicle volumes and turning-movement data across detoured, rural corridors not designed for heavy commercial traffic—while keeping staff safe and enabling timely decisions for routing, signaling and repairs.

McElhanney deployed a fleet of Miovision Scout camera-based, LTE-connected units and used remote training and DataLink software to collect verifiable, unattended data with fast (~15-minute) setups. The results informed rapid interventions (traffic signals at Highway 3 & 5A were installed within two weeks), helped prioritize repairs and workforce deployment, supplied timely public updates, and completed a province-wide, multi-location program in about eight weeks—improving safety and accelerating recovery.
