Becoming the Best Cycling City in America

The City of Chicago set out to become the best cycling city in America, but needed accurate, verifiable multimodal traffic data to guide its bike infrastructure strategy. To support this effort, the City of Chicago Department of Transportation worked with Fish Transportation Group and Miovision Technologies to collect reliable counts across the city, especially as traditional infrared sensors and pneumatic tubes had limitations in verifiability, safety, and coverage.

Miovision Technologies provided Miovision Scouts, a video-based portable data collection solution, enabling safer and more accurate pedestrian and cyclist counts at more than 500 locations between 2012 and 2014. The data helped Chicago make better infrastructure decisions within budget and contributed to major progress: the city rose from 5th in 2012 to 2nd in 2014 in Bicycling Magazine’s rankings, and by 2016 was named the “Best City in America for Cycling.”
