Via Christi Health improves ED throughput analysis with Minitab despite an 8-minute increase

Via Christi Health, the largest healthcare provider in Kansas, sought to improve efficiency and patient care in its emergency departments. The challenge was to determine if recent process changes had successfully decreased patient throughput time. To perform this data analysis, their internal process improvement team utilized Minitab Statistical Software.

Minitab was used to analyze patient data before and after the changes. The analysis, which included I-MR charts, histograms, and boxplots, revealed that the changes did not result in a statistically significant improvement; in fact, throughput times increased in some areas. This data-driven insight from Minitab allowed the team to refocus their efforts, leading to new recommendations such as realigning cleaning crew shifts with peak patient times to improve room availability.
