Metalor Technologies, a Swiss-based global leader in precious metals and advanced materials, needed to improve the quality of its high-purity silver powder used in microelectronics and other precision applications. The company faced a challenge controlling two critical but difficult-to-predict product properties—density and surface area—and turned to Minitab Statistical Software, including its Design of Experiments (DOE) tools, to better understand the key process inputs affecting production.
Using Minitab, Metalor ran a replicated full factorial DOE to evaluate reaction temperature, ammonium level, and stir rate, then built models and an overlaid contour plot to identify the best operating conditions for meeting customer specifications. The improved process reduced variation by 50%, cut rejected batches by 75%, and made silver powder production more efficient and cost-effective, with Minitab control charts confirming the sustained gains.
