Case Study: Human Resources Company reduces employee turnover with Minitab

A Minitab Case Study

Quality Improvement in Human Resources Decreasing Employee Turnover

Human Resources Company used Minitab Statistical Software to investigate a sharp rise in employee turnover at a large Ohio manufacturer of aerospace engine parts. The challenge was to understand why attrition had climbed from a normal 15–18% to more than 30% during the economic downturn, especially since exit interviews could not capture employees who left without notice.

Using Minitab, Jeff Parks analyzed employee data with hypothesis tests and binary logistic regression to identify factors linked to unannounced quits. Minitab showed commute distance was the key driver, with quitting risk rising sharply beyond 12–13 miles; the findings helped Human Resources Company revise hiring interviews and consider commute length in hiring decisions.
