Providing Quality Care for Kids The Franciscan Hospital for Children

Franciscan Hospital for Children, a leading provider of care for children with special health care needs, wanted to improve the capacity of its dental operating rooms. Using Minitab software and Quality Companion, the hospital’s quality improvement team applied Lean Six Sigma and DMAIC methods to analyze scheduling, registration, cancellations, and procedure timing, with the goal of increasing surgeries performed per day.

Minitab helped the hospital use process maps, Pareto charts, individual value plots, histograms, value stream maps, and control charts to identify bottlenecks and reduce unused operating room time. As a result, average surgeries per day rose from 8.7 to 9.9 within two weeks of the improve phase and later reached 11.2 during control, while day-to-day utilization stabilized and the hospital established performance metrics for ongoing improvement.
