Masimo achieves 0.060" dog ear packaging with Minitab

Masimo, a global medical technology company, sought to automate and improve the aesthetics and durability of their product packaging by implementing a plastic shrink wrap process. The challenge was to eliminate cosmetic defects and minimize "dog ears" on the wrap while also reducing material usage. They turned to vendor Minitab and its statistical software to help optimize this new, automated process.

Minitab's solution involved using Design of Experiments (DOE) to build a process model. An initial study revealed significant measurement system variation, which was diagnosed and improved using Minitab's Gage R&R analysis tool. A second DOE was then successfully executed, followed by using Minitab's Response Optimizer to identify the optimal equipment settings. This allowed Masimo to successfully validate and implement the automated process, achieving their target dog ear length, enhancing packaging quality, increasing output volume, and realizing significant cost savings.
