A Minitab Case Study
Ford Motor Company, one of the largest automakers in the United States, needed to eliminate visible brush marks on the carpet for the launch of the 2011 Ford Fiesta without hurting plushness or other quality characteristics. To solve this manufacturing challenge, Ford’s Body Interior Six Sigma team used Minitab Statistical Software and its Design of Experiments tools to study the carpet production process.
Minitab helped Ford run a fractional factorial experiment in just 24 runs, analyze complex interactions among needler settings, and verify results with a Gage R&R study. The optimized settings completely eliminated brush markings, unexpectedly improved carpet softness, and still met durability, stain resistance, color, and sheen requirements. The project was completed in 12 days and supported a successful, high-quality Fiesta launch.
