DuPont slashes landfill waste from 81 million pounds to 0 with Minitab

DuPont Building Innovations, a division of DuPont, set an ambitious goal to eliminate all landfill waste from its 15 global manufacturing and partner sites within three years. This challenge involved managing over 30 different waste streams, from manufacturing byproducts to cafeteria waste. To tackle this complex project, a Six Sigma team led by Dave Walter utilized Minitab Statistical Software to analyze the tremendous amount of data collected.

The team used Minitab to perform analyses like linear regression and factorial DOE, creating graphs to understand waste streams and determine how to change processes without affecting product quality. The solution led to a zero landfill achievement, turning waste into sellable byproducts. The results were significant: Minitab helped DuPont slash 81 million pounds of landfill to zero, earn $2.2 million from the sale of byproducts, and realize $400,000 in cost savings, all with no capital expenditures.
