Data Analysis Sparks New Electricity Consumption Forecasting Method

A leading semiconductor manufacturing company in Nonthaburi, Thailand, partnered with Minitab to solve a critical forecasting challenge: accurately predicting electricity consumption to support budgeting and financial planning. Using Minitab Statistical Software, the plant analyzed three years of historical electricity data to determine the most accurate forecasting method for its highly continuous manufacturing operation.

Minitab helped the team compare six established time series forecasting models with a new plant-specific method that incorporated machine requirements, idle time, and power usage by operating state. The company found that its custom method delivered the best results, with a MAPE of 2.48—significantly lower than the other models—helping reduce electricity costs and creating a forecasting approach that can be applied to other plants or businesses.
