Boston Scientific, a global developer and manufacturer of medical devices, faced the challenge of validating a new, smaller plastic pouch for its guidewires to reduce material costs without compromising the sterile seal integrity. To ensure the new packaging would work, they needed to identify the optimal settings for their sealing process's temperature and speed variables. They utilized Minitab Statistical Software to analyze the process and define these optimum conditions.
Using Minitab's Design of Experiments (DOE) tools, the team identified that front and rear sealing temperatures were the critical factors for achieving a strong seal. This analysis allowed them to establish optimal process settings and then use Minitab's capability analysis to verify the new process would consistently meet strength requirements. The solution validated the cost-saving redesign, which contributed to corporate-wide savings of over $330,000, allowing Boston Scientific to reduce costs while maintaining product quality and safety.
