At Home with Lean Six Sigma Akron Children’s Hospital Cuts Costs while Improving Care

Akron Children’s Hospital, the largest pediatric healthcare system in northern Ohio, needed to improve its home care and infusion services billing process. With a ticket defect rate of 30%, missing or incorrect documentation was causing delayed billing, reduced revenue, and unnecessary write-offs. The hospital turned to Minitab and its statistical software to analyze the problem and identify the root causes.

Using Minitab, a Lean Six Sigma team reviewed defective CMNs, mapped process issues, and used time series and control charts to guide process changes across Home Care and Healthcare Business Solutions. The team standardized workflows, improved order entry, and added follow-up procedures, cutting the defect rate to 13.3% and reducing the average time from product delivery to billing by 90%.
