Analyzing Data for a Delicate Finish: Six Sigma Ranch, Vineyards, and Winery

Six Sigma Ranch and Winery, founded by retired GE executive Kaj Ahlmann in Lower Lake, California, set out to combine the art of winemaking with Six Sigma’s data-driven approach. The challenge was to improve wine quality and consistency by controlling the many variables involved in grape sorting, fermentation, and finishing. To support this effort, the winery used Minitab Statistical Software.

Minitab helped Six Sigma Ranch and Winery apply tools such as Attribute Agreement Analysis, I-MR control charts, and capability studies to assess sorter consistency, monitor critical process variables, and reduce variation in production. As a result, grape sorters were trained for consistency, finished wines showed less variation, and the winery’s processes became capable of delivering within specification limits. Minitab also helped the team identify improvement opportunities and support ongoing quality and customer-focused decisions.
