202strong is a two-location functional fitness gym in Washington, D.C., that relies on barbells, kettlebells and other weight equipment. When COVID-19 forced the gym to close, owner Maddie Watkins faced the challenge of keeping members engaged and preserving the structure and community of their classes while people stayed at home.

Watkins launched live-streamed and pre-recorded classes and introduced a specialty Strongline membership to give members on-demand and live access. The shift kept engagement high: average virtual class size was 15 in April, there were 1,005 virtual and outdoor bookings in May, virtual sessions accounted for about 14% of bookings in July, and overall bookings grew 38.5% from January to July 2020.
