Preview of the The Humbug project Case Study

Using smartphones to detect mosquitoes, helping in our understanding of disease spread

The Humbug project, a research initiative aiming to combat malaria, faced the challenge of monitoring disease-carrying mosquitoes. Existing survey methods were inefficient and risky, creating an urgent need for a new automated detection solution. Mind Foundry was engaged to provide its machine learning expertise to address this problem.

Mind Foundry developed state-of-the-art machine learning models for the HumBug project, enabling the classification of mosquito species from their acoustic signatures recorded on smartphones. This solution, built using the Mind Foundry Platform, achieved a 90% accuracy rate in mosquito classification, providing a faster and more accurate method for detecting specific species and sexes of mosquitoes to aid in understanding disease spread.
