A Mimecast Case Study

Seamless email continuity supports complex acquisitions and major IT projects

Hill Dickinson LLP, a commercial law firm with about 1,490 email users, faced a complex IT challenge when it acquired parts of Halliwells (adding 175 staff) while simultaneously migrating from Novell GroupWise to Outlook/Exchange and moving document management to iManage. The firm needed to maintain business continuity and email availability at all times, reconcile differing email retention policies (six months vs. Hill Dickinson’s ten-year archive), and transfer only the specific accounts and data tied to the acquired business while protecting client confidentiality.

Mimecast’s cloud email platform enabled a rapid, weekend switchover by importing historic mail, selectively redirecting only the acquired accounts, and providing web access during GroupWise outages. The result was uninterrupted email service and no disruption to clients or lawyers, accelerated Exchange implementation in the new office, improved email management, and freed IT capacity to focus on system upgrades and future expansion—reducing migration risk and supporting ongoing growth.
