Richmondshire District Council Transforms Email Security and Data Privacy Footing to Refocus on Innovation

Richmondshire District Council, the North Yorkshire local authority supporting about 220 email users across 16 sites, was struggling with an on-premises Exchange 2016 environment that consumed significant staff time, lacked a central archive, and was vulnerable to advanced email threats (malicious URLs, sandboxable attachments and C‑level impersonation) while needing stronger controls for GDPR compliance.

The council deployed Mimecast M2A (Targeted Threat Protection, Cloud Archive and Content Control/DLP), moving security and archiving to the cloud. The solution sandboxes thousands of attachments, blocks the majority of malicious inbound mail, rejects ~3% of risky outbound messages, enables ~900 fast archive searches per month, and cut email administration from roughly two days a week to about an hour—freeing the ICT team to focus on innovation and improving data‑protection confidence.
