Protecting the Front Line from Cyber Attack

Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, which provides physical, mental health and social care across several counties in the UK, faced a rising tide of sophisticated email-based cyber-attacks and phishing attempts that threatened staff and patient services. Having survived WannaCry, the trust wanted to harden its “virtual front door” as it migrated to Office 365, moving away from manual interventions to a more automated, reliable defence.

The Trust deployed Mimecast (Secure Email Gateway, Targeted Threat Protection, Attachment Protect, Large File Send, Secure Messaging), which identifies impersonation, neutralises malicious links and attachments, and gives staff a safe portal with triage digests. Automation and visibility let support teams work proactively with minimal admin overhead; Mimecast caught about 400% more spam/graymail initially, significantly reducing user time spent on suspicious mail, improving phishing awareness, and freeing staff to focus on patient care.
