Mimecast helps Kansas City Public Schools cure a phishing epidemic

Kansas City Public Schools (33 schools, 2,200+ email users) faced a severe phishing epidemic in 2017: multiple staff accounts were compromised and used to send millions of spam messages. That activity ruined the district’s domain reputation and led to legitimate KCPS email being blocked by nearly 20 major ISPs, even though no district data was accessed.

KCPS implemented Mimecast Targeted Threat Protection and Secure Email Gateway to add URL protection, real-time visibility and daily incident logging; within days Mimecast identified 37 compromised accounts. Within eight weeks the district’s sender score climbed from the 20–40 range to 96, ISP blocks dropped from 19 to one, and staff stopped reporting bounced mail.
