Dick Hannah Dealerships, a 12-location auto group in the Portland area with about 1,000 email users, faced a spike in email-borne phishing and ransomware in late 2016. Their legacy email security couldn’t stop advanced attacks, causing user outages and forcing IT to spend roughly two hours a day on manual email remediation.
After evaluating options, CIO Sean McKannay implemented Mimecast (Secure Email Gateway with Targeted Threat Protection, Continuity, Archiving and an Outlook plug‑in), replacing two on‑prem solutions. Since deployment, zero‑day exploits have been blocked, helpdesk email requests have dropped, IT has regained 20–30 hours a month for strategic work, and archiving/storage costs were reduced by nearly $50,000 annually.
