Mimecast fuels better email use for Engen

Engen Petroleum, one of South Africa’s major refiners and retailers with 3,000 email users on a single domain, needed a better perimeter security and cost-effective email solution after spam and viruses consumed significant bandwidth. With a fast-moving marketing push for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the IT team looked to a SaaS provider that could also support targeted email stationery and rapid deployment.

Mimecast’s cloud service, integrated with Active Directory, gave Engen centralized policies, rotateable branded stationery, detailed reporting and a full audit trail. The company quickly confirmed deliveries and click-throughs, identified that 60–70% of mail was non-work related (leading to new policies), stripped large attachments into download links, lowered server utilization (avoiding Exchange upgrades), and gained stronger ISP support and compliance guidance—delivering cost savings, improved security and better email-driven marketing.
