How United Synagogue Secured a Multi-Site, Hybrid Email Environment to Defend Vital Services and Secure Sensitive Data

The United Synagogue, the largest union of Orthodox synagogues in Europe with 64 congregations and 60,000 members, faced an unstable, multi-site email estate—aging Exchange servers plus POP/IMAP/SMTP systems—while migrating to a hybrid M365 environment. With a small IT team, the organisation was exposed to advanced email threats (impersonation, malicious URLs), accidental data leaks and GDPR risk, so it needed unified, easy-to-manage protection and continuity across sites.

The IT team deployed Mimecast’s cloud archive, centralized gateway security, Targeted Threat Protection, Internal Email Protect, Continuity and Data Leak Prevention to harden email across the estate. Mimecast now scans ~220,000 emails monthly (rejecting ~61%), sandboxes ~13,000 attachments, blocks ~300 malware instances and protects ~3,000 URL clicks each month, regularly thwarting impersonation attacks—improving incident containment and recovery, aiding GDPR compliance and freeing IT to focus on higher‑value work.
