How Derry and Strabane District Council Secured Essential Services Against a Growing Cyber Threat

Derry City and Strabane District Council provides essential services to about 150,000 residents and 5,000 businesses, with email and network access critical for payroll and day‑to‑day operations across 650 users at 30 sites. Rising sophisticated email threats—impersonation, ransomware, weaponized attachments and malicious URLs—were bypassing the council’s on‑premises defenses, forcing reactive, time‑consuming remediation and putting service continuity at risk.

Following a successful trial, the council rolled out Mimecast Targeted Threat Protection (TTP) across all users, using attachment sandboxing, on‑click URL scanning and close vendor support for configuration. Mimecast now filters up to 40,000 emails weekly (rejecting ~30%), blocks impersonation and malware, sandboxes ~20,000 attachments and secures ~6,000 URL clicks monthly, giving better visibility, faster ROI, reduced manual work for IT and renewed peace of mind.
