A Mimecast Case Study
Butterfield Bank, a full‑service offshore financial institution founded in 1858 with operations in 11 countries and about 3,000 email users, faced a major business‑continuity challenge after Hurricane Ivan in 2004 left the Cayman Islands without email for a week. Because staff rely heavily on email for customer communications and regulatory requirements demand secure, auditable storage, the bank needed an “always‑on” solution that addressed continuity, compliance, security, archiving and policy control.
Butterfield deployed Mimecast’s Unified Email Management (via Foreshore) to provide cloud‑based continuity, multi‑layered spam/virus protection and offsite, searchable archiving. During Hurricane Dean the bank continued to send, receive and store email despite shutting down local systems; archived mail can be retained and retrieved for up to seven years to meet regulations, spam and viruses are blocked at source, administrative overhead was reduced, and the bank is rolling Mimecast out across other sites.
