Varna and Burgas Airports improve security and operational excellence with Milestone XProtect® open platform IP video software

Fraport Twin Star (a consortium of Fraport AG and BM Star) operates Varna and Burgas Airports on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast and needed to modernize aging, siloed analog surveillance systems. Key challenges included meeting strict 30‑day video retention rules, providing unified remote monitoring across both sites, avoiding vendor lock‑in, and managing high‑traffic operations on runways, aprons, fuel farms, baggage claim and customs areas.

RAD Group deployed Milestone XProtect® Enterprise with several hundred Axis IP cameras, IBM storage and Cisco networking to centralize live and recorded video, meet retention requirements and scale as needed. The solution delivered centralized control rooms, improved operational oversight, lower storage and camera costs (H.264 yielding ~30% savings), seamless network integration and ongoing upgrades via a PMA, with plans to add analytics and back‑end integrations for further efficiency and security gains.
