St. Petersburg Underground introduces intelligent video surveillance - Customer Case Study

St. Petersburg Metro SUE, one of Europe’s largest subway systems carrying over 2 million passengers across 67 stations daily, needed an intelligent video surveillance solution to ensure transport security in crowded halls, stations and on escalators. The system had to provide real-time situation awareness, rapid incident response, post-event video analysis, automatic detection of unauthorized or abandoned objects, and meet regulatory requirements for image quality and functionality.

The Metro deployed an IP-based backbone using Axis network cameras, Milestone XProtect software and integration by Aspekt Severo-Zapad JSC, leveraging PoE, multicast streaming and remote access for monitoring and configuration. Launched in 2014 and still expanding, the system now covers 24 stations with over 3,200 cameras, provides two continuous live streams plus a minimum 30-day video archive, supports multiple vendor analytics and automatic detection functions, and is being rolled out to additional stations.
