Hurtigruten, the historic Norwegian coastal ferry operator, suffered a major engine-room fire on MS Nordlys in September 2011 that led to a five-month yard repair and a decision to modernize onboard communications and surveillance. Consultancy NCMC was engaged to define a future-proof standard to improve safety, situational awareness and ship-to-shore communication across the fleet.

The solution replaced a destroyed analog matrix with a modern IP network, a dedicated surveillance VLAN, 23 stainless-steel Axis network cameras and Milestone XProtect video management software, with multiple redundant network technologies to maintain contact with shore. The integrated system gives real-time monitoring of the engine room, bridge, car deck, retail and passenger areas, improving crew response, operational efficiency and passenger safety, while remaining scalable for more cameras and analytics in the future.
