Case Study: NYC Marathon achieves enhanced situational awareness and event safety with Milestone Systems

A Milestone Systems Case Study

Preview of the NYC Marathon Case Study

NYC Marathon Highlights the Power of Partnering for Shared Security Network

The TCS New York City Marathon, organized by New York Road Runners, draws over 50,000 finishers and millions of spectators, creating significant safety and medical-response challenges. Dense trees, winding roads and crowded finish areas in Central Park often obscure sightlines, making it hard for medical and security teams to monitor runners and coordinate timely responses.

A team led by VIRSIG built a high-availability wireless mesh that linked Sony IPELA cameras, NVT transmitters and Firetide radios to a Milestone XProtect VMS with a 55-screen Smart Wall and mobile clients. The IP-based, analytics-enabled system extended coverage into hard-to-reach areas, delivered consolidated real-time situational awareness, supported faster triage and tent management, and remained resilient during outages—resulting in improved coordination and a safer event.
