Milestone video technology powers next-gen AI for smart cities

City of Dubuque, Iowa, faced the challenge of turning a large network of traffic cameras into reliable real-time intelligence for traffic management, safety, and emergency response. Working with Milestone Systems and its XProtect Corporate VMS and XProtect Smart Wall, the city needed an AI solution that could perform accurately in complex, changing real-world conditions instead of producing too many false positives.

Milestone Systems led Project Hafnia with Vaidio to train and deploy AI on high-quality, real-world video data from Dubuque’s cameras. The result was a jump in model accuracy from 80% to over 95%, with more than 100 traffic cameras used in the trial and a scalable platform now set to expand across hundreds more cameras, creating a tested blueprint for other cities.
