Megapixel IP network installation for research project at Queen Mary, University of London

Queen Mary, University of London launched a three-year, EPSRC-funded BEWARE research project to develop behavior-based situational awareness across distributed CCTV networks. The team needed to collect real-world, high-quality multi-camera video to build people-tagging and cross-camera behavior models and to automate PTZ actions — a capability not available in existing systems and essential to reduce information overload and improve real-time camera selection.

Smart CCTV installed a megapixel IP network using IQeye 1.3MP cameras, Milestone XProtect® video management software, PoE with fiber backhaul, a virtual LAN and on-board NVRs, with a minimum 15 fps on eight channels and privacy masking where required. The system was commissioned in February 2008, delivered on time and within budget, and is now operating efficiently — providing the high-resolution, multi-view data and integrated platform needed for the project’s behavior-profiling and automated-camera research.
