Heriot-Watt University chooses scalable IP CCTV solution to enhance student and staff safety

Heriot-Watt University, a multi-campus institution with around 7,000 on-campus students in Scotland and 10,000 more on international programmes, faced an outdated, piecemeal CCTV setup that offered limited external coverage and no integrated monitoring. With a 380-acre main campus and plans to expand, the university needed a state-of-the-art, scalable surveillance solution to improve safety for students and staff and to provide a reliable investment for the next decade.

King Communications implemented a Milestone IP video solution on an IBM hardware platform delivered by Seric, creating a centrally managed, 24/7 control room using the university’s IP network and IBM Director for system monitoring. The phased rollout will total about 40 intelligent IP cameras that can be plugged into any network port, support remote web viewing, reduce transmitted/storage data by 60–80% through smart motion handling, and enable fast forensic searches—resulting in greater campus coverage, easier operation, and stronger peace of mind for university security teams.
