El Paso Gets Pope Visit Crowds

The City of El Paso and local agencies faced a major public-safety challenge when Pope Francis’ 2016 visit drew an estimated 200,000 people to the El Paso–Ciudad Juarez border area. Officials worried about severe roadway congestion, pedestrian surges across international bridges and heightened security risks, and multiple federal, state and local organizations needed coordinated access to live video during the event.

Integrated Technology & Design (ITD) used Milestone XProtect Corporate to tie together more than 100 cameras (Axis, TruVision and Avigilon) across city and school district networks over 10 Gb fiber, giving all agencies shared, secure access to live feeds and situational awareness. The integrated system supported coordinated monitoring, helped keep response times low, and — according to stakeholders — delivered high-quality, accessible video; there were no major incidents and feedback from participating agencies was positive.
