Dublin Zoo Safeguards Ostrich Nests Using Milestone ‘EggsProtect

Dublin Zoo in Ireland faced a growing need for a centralized video management system to handle an expanding network of IP cameras used for perimeter security, animal welfare and behavior studies. Keepers were especially concerned after overnight predation incidents—declining ostrich egg numbers and attacks on flamingos—so they needed reliable, around-the-clock visibility to identify intruders and better study animal behavior.

Milestone XProtect Corporate, integrated with 140 Axis thermal and IR cameras and deployed by partner Kelcom, provided live and recorded video across 17 viewing stations plus mobile access for staff. The system captured badgers and otters entering habitats, enabling humane trapping and relocation that stopped egg thefts and reduced flamingo losses, while also supporting in-depth animal behavior studies, remote expert consultations and improved public engagement.
