City of Dubuque steers the future of traffic safety towards IP technology

The City of Dubuque, a regional hub of about 60,000, needed to restore intersection video after switching from network cameras to microwave detectors left them without visual monitoring for their fiber‑linked traffic signal network. Without footage, engineers and police lacked the situational awareness needed to analyze accidents, optimize signals, and improve street safety.

Working with systems integrator RACOM, the city deployed a mix of Axis IP cameras (fixed Q1755, PTZ Q6035 and WDR Q1604 models) across 80 intersections (about 260 cameras) and used Milestone XProtect for 24/7 recording, mapping and mobile access. The system gave engineers clear incident footage to guide low‑cost changes to signage and markings (avoiding major construction), helped police and citizens resolve and even reverse accident claims, and provided continuous oversight that measurably improved traffic safety and operational efficiency.
