School district empowers students with personalized learning

Fresno Unified School District partnered with Microsoft Teams to implement a Personalized Learning Initiative (PLI) aimed at shifting classroom culture toward teacher-led, technology-enabled personalized learning. The district’s challenge was to boost collaboration, digital literacy, and academic achievement across 101 schools, 12,000 students, and 220 teachers.

Using Microsoft Teams to drive daily digital collaboration and instructional planning, PLI produced clear, measurable gains after one year: PLI students were 25% more likely to meet or exceed standards (English +12.2%, Math +2%), student collaboration rose 32% and teacher collaboration 27%, students used technology far more often (20 vs. 11 days in March), and teacher tech use climbed to 55% versus 5% for non-PLI—along with reported improvements in social-emotional skills. Microsoft Teams helped form deeper collaboration networks and improved learning outcomes, which Fresno Unified and Microsoft plan to expand in future PLI cycles.
