South African logistics experts transform operations with an agile move to cloud

Bidvest Panalpina Logistics (BPL) is a South African provider of end-to-end supply chain and logistics services with about 1,400 employees across 20 locations. Faced with performance problems, cumbersome disaster-recovery, peak‑period capacity shortfalls, and unreliable local power and bandwidth, BPL needed to modernize its data center to become more agile and cost‑effective.

Working with partner BUI, BPL migrated production workloads, DR and offsite replication to Microsoft Azure using Azure Site Recovery, Azure Backup, StorSimple, Office 365 and Operations Management Suite in a “lift and shift” approach. The move required minimal oversight, reduced IT administration, accelerated workflows, spurred a cloud-first culture, and is projected to save about 35 million rand (US$2.7M) over five years while enabling further cloud rollouts like SQL and data warehousing.
