South African government department leads in digital public sector success

The Department of Science and Technology, a Pretoria-based South African government agency of about 512 staff responsible for national research and development, faced hampered workflows, poor internal communication and rising security risks caused by a disparate mix of legacy Microsoft, Linux and open‑source systems. These incompatibilities made file sharing and collaboration difficult and strained IT support across the organisation.

The department moved to a unified Microsoft infrastructure—including Exchange, SharePoint, Skype for Business, Active Directory and System Center—under an enterprise licensing agreement, implemented with Gold partner Global Computing & Telecoms. The rollout (completed in late 2016) centralized management and updates, transferred skills to internal teams, strengthened security and enabled modern collaboration tools, resulting in faster support, higher user engagement and measurable productivity gains.
