London bus operator builds custom apps for improved efficiency and collaboration

Arriva London, a major bus operator serving more than 100 routes with 1,600 buses and 4,000 drivers (about 18% of London’s bus services), faced pressure to meet Transport for London performance standards for safety, punctuality, cleanliness and cost control. With many long‑service staff who are not technology natives, the company needed a simple, mobile way to improve route management, monitor staff performance, stay compliant and reduce manual paperwork.

Using Microsoft PowerApps, Flow, Office 365 and SharePoint, Arriva built custom apps to replace paper processes—live controller monitoring, automated absence notifications with GDPR support, and a field‑service app that captures GPS, photos and barcode data for faster repairs—plus a proposal management app for schedule changes. The apps boosted efficiency, transparency and collaboration, sped up repairs and data capture, improved compliance and are now being rolled out more widely across the organization.
