Life sciences leader unites global workforce, breaks down technology barriers with SharePoint and Yammer

Thermo Fisher Scientific, a global leader in life sciences with more than 65,000 employees, faced a fragmented internal communications environment after acquiring Life Technologies: some staff used an outdated SharePoint 2007 intranet while others used Jive. The company needed a single, scalable intranet that supported cloud document storage, real-time collaboration, and a social-media feel to unite teams across functions and geographies.

Thermo Fisher deployed Office 365 and launched iConnect, a SharePoint Online and Yammer–based intranet with OneDrive storage, WalkMe onboarding, personalization, mobile access, and real-time translation. The unified platform drove strong adoption—about 22,000 daily SharePoint users, 150 organizational sites, 96 geographic sites, 3,000+ collaboration sites, and over 80% Yammer engagement among activated users within six months—while reducing IT maintenance, speeding support through social Q&A, and improving global collaboration, search, and document coauthoring.
