Victoria’s Level Crossing Removal Project strips learning barriers to keep workers safe

The Level Crossing Removal Project, a large Victorian rail infrastructure program removing 75 level crossings by 2025, faced a “capability versus capacity” challenge: while there were plenty of workers available, many lacked the rail‑specific expertise needed to work safely and efficiently. To capture and share on‑the‑job learning across multiple partner organizations, LXRP built a knowledge management solution using Microsoft Power Apps (with SharePoint, Teams and Power Automate) to give everyone fingertip access to consistent information and best practices.

Working with partner Seven Sigma, LXRP launched KnApp — an interactive lessons‑learned and collaboration app built on Microsoft Power Apps, SharePoint, Teams and Power Automate — piloted with 250 users across five Alliance Projects and poised to scale to about 1,000 employees. Microsoft Power Apps–enabled KnApp has accelerated sharing of safety innovations (for example a road‑roller halo light), improved knowledge transfer and consistency across sites, and reduced risk exposure — crucial when LXRP can record up to a million hours worked a month and even a single high‑consequence incident can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
