STEM learning at scale: Using Microsoft Teams and AI for a more humanistic education

The University of New South Wales faced the challenge of delivering high‑quality, inclusive STEM education to large cohorts—500 first‑year engineering students—while keeping learning personal, collaborative, and accessible. To meet this need they adopted Microsoft Power Apps within the broader Microsoft ecosystem (including Microsoft Teams, Azure Cognitive Services, Power BI, OneNote and Stream) to scale interaction, assessment, and course management without reinventing pedagogy.

Using Microsoft Power Apps integrated with Teams, Azure Bot Service/Question Bot, Cognitive Services and Power BI, the vendor helped build real‑time digital inking, AI‑driven Q&A, predictive analytics and one‑click student dashboards that generate personalized study packs and streamline grading. The approach delivered measurable impact: 100% of students reported feeling part of a learning community, course satisfaction exceeded 99%, AI freed up to ~70% of marker time (processing >25,000 exam pages), and rapid deployment (Question Bot in eight weeks) enabled scalable, data‑driven improvements across the course — all delivered through Microsoft Power Apps and the Microsoft platform.
