Minnesota teams up with Microsoft to save lives and meet equity needs during pandemic

Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) needed to roll out COVID‑19 vaccinations quickly and equitably, especially to underserved, multilingual, and socially vulnerable communities amid uncertain vaccine supply and changing CDC guidance. MNIT partnered with Microsoft Power Apps, leveraging the Microsoft Vaccination Management solution built on Azure, Dynamics 365, the Power Platform (including Power Apps) and Power BI, with support from Microsoft Consulting Services to deliver a fast, scalable registration and distribution system.

Microsoft Power Apps implemented a customized “Vaccine Connector” front end, multilingual and accessibility adjustments, and a Power BI analytics dashboard to target outreach and monitor equity. The solution went live two weeks after engagement and handled 100,000 registrations in the first hour, 243,000 in a day, and over 1 million total—helping MNIT match residents to appointments faster, accelerate vaccinations in vulnerable communities, and vaccinate hundreds of thousands more quickly.
