A Microsoft Power Apps Case Study
Parkland County, AB, a mid-sized Canadian municipality serving roughly 32,000 residents, needed to modernize decades‑old, paper‑based and siloed systems (over 60 disparate tools) to improve efficiency, standardize processes, and enable citizen self‑service. To do this it standardized on Microsoft technologies—most notably Dynamics 365 and the Microsoft Power Platform, including Microsoft Power Apps, Power Automate, and Power BI—to drive a coordinated digital transformation across departments.
Using Microsoft Power Apps alongside Dynamics 365 Customer Service, Finance, and Human Resources, and automating workflows with Power Automate and dashboards with Power BI, the county digitized programs such as the STARS recognition app, consolidated 3‑1‑1 and CRM, extended mobile field access with GIS integration, and automated permit workflows. The results include retiring several legacy systems, an estimated 10% cost reduction, faster staff processes (including auto‑approved fire permits when criteria are met), improved real‑time reporting, and greater citizen engagement through an expanded online portal—capabilities enabled in large part by Microsoft Power Apps.
