Case Study: Action Apps achieves a Power BI–driven athlete management system for sports teams with Microsoft Power Apps

A Microsoft Power Apps Case Study

Preview of the Action Apps Case Study

Action Apps empowers sports teams with apps, Power BI-run data platform

Action Apps is a UK-based startup founded by two Microsoft-focused colleagues to build an athlete management system (Power AMS). Facing a crowded AMS market with costly bespoke platforms, limited flexibility, poor data access, and GDPR/security concerns, Action Apps chose Microsoft Power Apps (and the broader Microsoft Power Platform, Power BI, Dataverse, Azure, Teams, Outlook, and Power Automate) to deliver a configurable, data-first solution.

Using Microsoft Power Apps, Action Apps implemented Power AMS: Coach and Athlete apps built on Power Apps with Dataverse, Azure data pipelines, and Power BI reporting, plus integration with Teams, Outlook, and wearable GPS data. The solution automates heavy data flows (over 100,000 API calls per week for one team), is deployed to English and European clubs (including Preston North End FC), and delivers measurable time savings—about 30 minutes per staff member per day—by enabling rapid, configurable reporting and real-time decision making.
