Washington Metro Area Transit Authority’s six-month migration to Microsoft Azure drives culture change and better service

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the nation’s third‑largest transit authority, faced aging IT systems that drove high maintenance costs and service disruptions as it ran rail and bus networks around Washington, D.C. To modernize its digital infrastructure and move to the cloud, WMATA worked with Microsoft Power Apps and Microsoft Azure services to pursue a faster, more secure operational model.

With support from partner Presidio and Microsoft Power Apps, WMATA migrated 11 critical infrastructure applications to Azure in six months, cutting manual processes, enabling better cross‑team collaboration, and freeing employees to focus on core issues. The move created a more reliable transit system with fewer outages, reduced maintenance burden, and helped shift WMATA’s culture toward ongoing technological innovation.
