Walgreens Boots Alliance puts customers first in its digital transformation journey

Walgreens Boots Alliance faced a large-scale digital transformation challenge: modernize IT operations, migrate hundreds of applications (including a massive SAP landscape) to the cloud, and enable omnichannel retail and healthcare services while supporting remote work and rapid COVID-19 response. To achieve this, WBA partnered with Microsoft technologies—notably Microsoft Power BI alongside Azure, Microsoft 365, Teams, Azure Bot Service, Azure Machine Learning, and Azure Synapse Analytics—to create a scalable, cloud-first foundation.

Using Microsoft solutions, WBA moved key workloads to Azure (migrating nearly 100 TB in a seamless SAP cutover within a 20‑hour window), deployed Microsoft 365 E5 to 400,000 employees, launched a COVID-19 Healthcare Bot in under a week, and adopted Teams to sustain remote collaboration. The migration lowered CPU utilization, improved application responsiveness, enabled provisioning of compute resources in minutes, and accelerated time to market from months to days/weeks; Microsoft Power BI and Azure analytics now give WBA better inventory visibility and data-driven decision making across the business.
