Case Study: Medical Teams International achieves real-time disease surveillance and faster diagnoses for 1M+ South Sudanese refugees in Uganda with Microsoft Power BI

A Microsoft Power BI Case Study

Preview of the Medical Teams International Case Study

Using Microsoft cloud services to transform health care for more than 1 million South Sudanese refugees in Uganda

Medical Teams International, a nonprofit running clinics in Ugandan refugee settlements that serve more than 1 million patients a year, faced slow, error-prone paper-based reporting (77 forms) that delayed outbreak detection and strained staff as clinic coverage expanded. To digitize and scale care, Medical Teams partnered with Cambia and adopted Microsoft cloud technologies — including the Azure platform and Microsoft Power BI — to automate data collection and analysis.

Using a mobile app connected to Azure and dashboards built with Microsoft Power BI, Medical Teams International replaced manual forms with near-real-time reporting and automated alerts. The solution cut data-entry errors by 90%, drove untested malaria prescriptions from over 50% to below 5%, reduced the time to detect outbreaks from weeks to days, eliminated hours of daily error correction by clerks, and is being scaled toward all 40 clinics serving the refugee population.
